Emerald Seas is an elegant two-level private home built into a mountainside beside the blue-green Caribbean Sea. Stone steps wind down through lush vegetation to a sunning platform on the clear buoyant water for which Emerald Seas is named. Wonderful snorkeling can be enjoyed on this coral reef. The open-plan living room leads to a 500-square-foot verandah and panoramic view of the sea. Plump cushions on white wicker furniture make this upstairs porch a peaceful haven for morning coffee, reading, napping and star-gazing. Also on the main floor are the four large bedrooms, each overlooking the deep blue water.

Glass doors open from the pool terrace to the family room ... equipped with bar, games cupboard, television, video library for children and adults, ping pong table and sound system. Speakers fill the lower level and pool terrace with music. The family room can be used as a fifth bedroom with en-suite bath. Next door is the inside dining room built into a natural rock formation. Just outside are the al fresco dining area and large private pool. Long sunsets from the pool terrace are breathtaking. Standing against the railings on verandahs or pool terrace, it is easy to imagine being on the prow of a ship gliding smoothly over the sea. The soothing sound of the surf is ever present, from the spacious bedrooms to the outdoor dining area. Candlelight dinners sometimes are enchanted by the dramatic show of distant lightning on the night horizon.

Emerald Seas’ state-of-the-art kitchen and creative cook merit special mention. Equipment includes a bread-baker, waffle maker, ice cream maker, microwave, Jenn-Aire, Cuisinart, dishwasher and ice-maker. Each morning, the aroma of today’s fresh-baked bread lures guests to the breakfast table. Outside is the barbecue for special dinners of grilled steak, fish and lobster (when in season).

• Next door is Sans Souci Hotel & Spa, beach club and fitness spa, where guests can purchase discounted day or evening passes for water sports, sauna, entertainment and excellent food and drink in four world-class award-winning restaurants (no children under 16). Complimentary membership at Sans Souci’s Gym & Aerobics Club entitles Emerald Seas guests to free access for up to 4 guests per day. Emerald Seas guests may also purchase day passes for restaurant and beach facilities for $45 and evening passes for $55. No children under age 16.

• Membership at Sandals Golf & Country Club (12 minutes away) entitles Emerald Seas guests to JGA greens fees of $25 (regular rate $100).

• Discounted day passes are available also at Couples Hotel, a 3-minute drive to a beautiful white sand beach. Special Emerald Seas day pass rate of $45 entitles guests to windsurfers, kayaks, water-skiing, scuba diving, hobicats, squash and volleyball, food and drink restaurants (no children under 16).

• Jamaica Grand offers sailing, windsurfing, kayaks, shuffleboard and volleyball. Heave-Ho rents large sailboats with captains by the day or the week.

• Beautiful James Bond Beach is 30 minutes from Emerald Seas.
