This is a very convenient location for a country holiday, amid picturesque countryside with many attractive villages and typical old English pubs, yet the coast is only half an hour's drive away, and even London can be easily reached by train for a day's excursion. Locally there are lovely walks through the apple orchards, and nearby the Hop Farm Country Park makes an interesting visit. The area's history is evident in its many splendid castles, including Scotney (NT), Hever and the majestic Leeds Castle. Other places to visit are Penshurst Place, a splendid medieval manor house, and the beautiful gardens at Sissinghurst (NT), designed by the writer Vita Sackville-West. Just 8 miles away is the charming town of Tunbridge Wells offering excellent shopping.

Along the coast is ancient Rye, now a couple of miles inland, with its maze of medieval streets and old houses, including Lamb House (NT) where Henry James lived. Also just inland lies Battle, built on the site of the Battle of Hastings, and in Rye Bay is a long stretch of sand backed by dunes. With water sports and fishing to enjoy at Bewl Bridge Reservoir, golf nearby, shops and two good pubs serving food just a short stroll away, Redmans is hard to beat for comfort, convenience and variety.
